Voiceovers And LinkedIn Etiquette – The Not Silent Blog 7/12/16

In the past few weeks I’ve gotten some interesting messages from new connections on LinkedIn.

One wanted to “swap endorsements” with me. He said he’s been giving endorsements in exchange for getting them. I politely declined his offer and told him I only endorse people I’ve actually worked with.

In the invitation another one sent me, he said he had a question. I accepted the invite and asked him what his question was. He replied with what appeared to be a canned response saying, among other things,

“I came across your profile and really would love to learn more about you and your company…and I’d love to get your opinion on a few questions I have that relate to your experience. I believe there can be many things we can do together and would love to explore them! Can we grab a few minutes on the phone next week?”

I asked for clarification and if he was considering hiring me as a voice talent. He has not written back as yet and I don’t expect him to.

The third was from a young lady who is currently attending my Alma mater and found me via a LinkedIn alumni group. She just wanted to say hi and that she liked my work. She’s a graphic design major and I checked out her portfolio. I was so impressed with her work you know what I did? I endorsed some of her skills!

TIP OF THE WEEK

What did a young college student do right that two supposed professionals did wrong?

  1. She used LinkedIn features (messaging and the alumni group) in the spirit intended. The first connection was trying, at least in my opinion, to abuse the Endorsement feature.

  2. She didn’t ask me for anything when at least one of the other two did.

  3. She and I had a meaningful conversation. The other two disappeared when they didn’t get what they want.

FYI she’s been on LinkedIn for only a few weeks. If this young lady is any indication of future leadership, I think we are in good hands!

Oh, and her name is Melanie Egan. Click here to see some of her fantastic work.
