GKN Weekly Update – 11/20/12 – I’m Hot For Teaching! aka Van Halen Rules
Happy Soon-To-Be-Thanksgiving! I wish you safe travels so you can get all hopped up on tryptophan & sweet potato pie and what-not…
In the past two weeks I’ve had some more private coaching sessions with voice talent who are looking to improve their business. I really enjoy it! At first I was kind of nervous about coaching my peers but over the past year I’ve gotten more comfortable with it. At first I was thinking, who the hell am I to teach someone about the industry? And then I thought, shut up, Tom. And I was like, oh, okay.
I’m concerned that there are very few of us who teach about the BUSINESS side of the voiceover industry. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting someone who can teach you technique or how to produce your demo, but not how to market it, or build your brand, or how to invoice. Nobody teaches you how to set up your office space, or build a business model, or set goals. This is important stuff, people!
TIP OF THE WEEK: Here’s a little “Golden Nugget” that I share during my seminars & classes. It is critical to remember that when you’re inside the booth, you’re an artist. When you’re outside the booth, you’re a business. Act like it!
Don’t like paperwork? Yeah, I don’t care. It’s part of running a successful business. If you really hate paperwork, you have three choices:
1. Suck it up and do it
2. Outsource it (retired parents, college students, and stay-at-home moms are good candidates)
3. May I suggest community theater?
I suggest community theater because it’s a hobby, not a profession. No paperwork there! If you want to be in the voiceover business, treat it like a business and it will respond in kind. If you don’t, it will also respond in kind…
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: You become what you think about most of the time. Earl Nightingale
STUFF!: And what do I think about most of the time? Being a successful voiceover business! Oh, and cake. I love cake.
