Ah, workflow.
Sounds dirty, doesn’t it? Dirty as in a grownup, cubicle-like, stop-chaining-me-down word.
Well, I love it! But you wouldn’t expect otherwise from me, would ya? 🙂
Here’s why I love it. I, am a selfish bastard. I want my selfish bastard voiceover career to run as smoothly as possible so I can take my selfishly-earned money and do fun, selfish stuff with all that free time my selfishly motivated workflow provides me. Selfish, right?
I divide workflow into three categories:
Physical Workflow
Digital Workflow
Mental Workflow
Break it down for me, fellas.
Physical Workflow: Basically, where you put all your physical crap. I’m talking about your desk, your recording booth, your filing cabinets (you do have them, don’t you?), etc. Is there a place for everything and is everything in its place?
Digital Workflow: Basically, where you put all your digital crap. I’m talking about your email, your social media platforms, your important digital documents. Is your email organized by folder or do you have 12,391 messages in your Inbox? Do you have your online login information in an accessible, safe location? Do you back your up hard drive every day?
Mental Workflow: Basically, where you keep your, um, mental crap. You know, your brain. Do you have a Mission Statement? Annual goals? An Action Plan? Do you often feel prepared & ready to take on the day or are you distressed & lacking focus, not sure what to do next or how to do it?
TIP OF THE WEEK
Clean your desk. Have a place for your receipts. Build binders for each part of your business to store and quickly access important documents.
Using Outlook or your email site, create folders for each area of your business and for each client. Use an app or your browser to store your login and password info. Use a Bookmark Manager like XMarks to store your favorite websites. Use a service like Carbonite to back up your hard drive. There are a bunch of other great online backup services you can check out by clicking here.
Craft a Mission Statement. Create Annual Goals, Build an Action Plan to realize those goals on a daily basis.
Be a selfish bastard. Make your life easier!
