Voiceovers And New York – The Not Silent Blog 6/2/20

I love New York.

It’s cliche but it’s true. Not because of the hustle or the “city that never sleeps” stuff. I love the food, the skyline, the grid layout, the history, the food, and the architecture. Did I mention the food?

I also love New York because of the pandemic. Not the pandemic itself obviously, but the reaction to the pandemic. As an example, my wife and I took a walk in Central Park this past Sunday to get out of the house and in the words of Billy Joel, “forget about life for a while”. It was a perfect day weather-wise and about 80%-90% of everyone we saw either had a mask on or had one on-hand and EVERYONE was social distancing. BTW the park was bustling with activity and in the hour+ that we were there not once did I notice anyone behaving irresponsibly. Oh, and turtles.

Since it was such a nice day we decided to walk home from Central Park, which is about a 40 block trek. On the way home we picked up some lunch and had a really nice stroll. We took mental notes of the restaurants we’d like to try. Empanada Mama, you have been warned.

As we walked through Columbus Circle, there were a lot of cops hanging out. I’m talking like 20+ cops. Then we saw Trump International Hotel and all the barricades and thought, oh yeah well of course. Things are going to get interesting around here in a few hours.

A couple of blocks from home, we also noticed that the streets on both sides of our neighborhood police precinct were blocked off and there were a fair amount of police. That’s when we realized they’re protecting their precinct since one was burned down in Minneapolis. Yikes.

Last night our neighborhood was quiet save for the occasional police car and low-flying helicopter. We’re thankful that our neighborhood is safe and there was no loss of life last night due to the protests.

TIP OF THE WEEK

If you live in New York (or anywhere else, for that matter) love and support your community. Look out for your neighbors and keep your eyes open for injustices and troublemakers. Keep doing your voiceover auditions, keep training, keep booking, and keep on keepin’ on. 🙂
