I’ve gotten to the point in my voiceover career where voice talents, both aspiring and veteran, regularly seek my advice.
While I never take myself seriously, I take that very seriously. I’m sincerely flattered every time I’m asked for my input and I always do my best to give thoughtful, honest feedback.
I say thoughtful because obviously I want to give them good advice. I also say honest because, well, I want to give them good advice. Here’s an example…
Twice in the past two weeks two voice talents have asked me whether they should sign up for a particular P2P (pay-to-play) casting site. No, it’s not the one who has recently been scrutinized for it’s curious pricing practices. It’s a more obscure one which I have been a member of for years now.
Anyway, both of the voice talents in question found the site, saw my name on the roster, and wrote to see what my experience has been. I read their emails carefully. Talent A has had great success with P2P sites. Talent B has been on the two “biggest” P2P sites for years and hasn’t booked a single job. I went to their respective websites to listened to their demos. Talent A’s demos were quite good and he had an impressive list of clients on his website. Talent B’s demos were not good.
I told both of them I’ve had a great experience with the P2P site in question. I told Talent A that if he has had success with other sites then it may be worth his while. I told Talent B that since he has no success with other P2P sites then it may not be worth his while. I also suggested he examine other areas of his business model.
TIP OF THE WEEK
I know many highly successful voice talents who have had no luck with P2P sites. I also know far less successful voice talents who book gigs on P2P sites regularly.
With that in mind, I will always be happy to give you advice if you ask for it. However, I will never, ever tell you how to spend your money. I’ll give you the best advice I can share my experiences but ultimately how you invest in your career is up to you.
