GKN Weekly Update 7/16/13 – Blogging Rules To Make Your Blog Rule!

Hello and Happy National Corn Fritters Day! Really? Really?!

Actually, I do have a holiday to celebrate: my Blog-aversary! I started the Good Karma Network as a Yahoo group in October 2006 but it turned into an actual blog on July 14, 2008. Before that it was just a slew of “look at me!” posts, talking only about the voiceover gigs I booked and having the audacity to wonder why I had so few followers. Well, I’ve learned a lot since then about what to and what not to blog about:

TIP OF THE WEEK:

1. Be Consistent: If you’re gonna blog, do it on a regular basis. Daily weekly, monthly, whatever works for you. It demonstrates professionalism, self-discipline, and consideration.

2. Be Thoughtful: If you’re gonna blog, have something to say! I’ve been blogging for five years and some weeks it’s harder to come up with content than others. My go-to is always my planner. I look at what happened last week and sure enough, there is always something great or stupid (or both!) that happened to inspire me. Also, don’t always make it about yourself. It can be about your observations and experiences, but don’t make it too me-centric.

3. Be Kind: If you’re gonna blog, be nice! I do have the occasional rant, but I always try to be considerate of the person or institution in question. Your blog is a tool, not a weapon!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: I think work and business can be creative and exciting. A hoot. A growth experience. A journey of lifelong learning and constant surprise. Tom Peters

STUFF!: I am shutting down the Good Karma Network Yahoo Group . I’ve had it for a long time but when Meetup got popular, the Yahoo Group became antiquated. Most of the Yahoo Group members are on the Facebook Group anyway so there you go. I’ll shut it down on Monday July 22. If you’re a member of the GKN Yahoo Group you can:

Subscribe to the blog via my website: http://www.tomdheere.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page and enter your email address in the “Join the Good Karma Network!” box.

BONUS STUFF!: I saw Cloud Atlas for the first time, and then quickly after that for the second time. I think its a freaking masterpiece! I was blown away by the scope of the story, the acting, the effects, everything. The funny thing is that two of my best friends said it’s one of the worst movies they’ve ever seen! I did some research and the consensus is that either you love Cloud Atlas with all your heart or you despise with the burning hatred of a thousand dying suns and there is no in between. I don’t remember a movie that polarizing since Suckerpunch!
