Hello and Happy Battle of Pueblo Day and soon-to-be Mother’s Day. My mom said not to get her flowers this year, just take her to see Spider-Man 2. Fine by me!
Being a voice talent has many perks. Among others; you work from home, you don’t have a boss, and it’s potentially quite lucrative. Another perk for me is the ability to travel. Because of voiceovers, I’ve had the pleasure of going to New York City, Hershey, PA, Ventura Beach, Disneyland, Charlotte, San Antonio, and many places in between. The biggest perk by far is the people.
Over the past few years I’ve attended many networking events, conferences (both online and in person), parties, and awards shows and in so doing I’ve met some of the kindest, funnest, grooviest folks ever. When I think about how lucky I am, two events always spring to mind: APAC and FaffCon.
APAC and FaffCon are the same, but different. Ready for a George Carlin-esque comparison?
APAC is a conference. FaffCon is an un-conference.
APAC is always in New York. FaffCon is held in a different part of the country every time.
APAC is for audio book narrators of all experience levels. FaffCon is for any kind of voice talent but must be experienced and able to contribute to the conversation.
APAC is a one-day conference culminating in The Audies Gala award show the next day. FaffCon is now a four-day event where everybody wins!
APAC has an impressive list of scheduled guest speakers and panelists, among which are some of the top audio book narrators and publishers in the country (yes, I’m one of them but don’t let that dissuade you from going!). FaffCon has no scheduled speakers or panelists. The attendees themselves are!
APAC is awesome. FaffCon is also awesome!
TIP OF THE WEEK: I’ve heard folks sing the praises of and disparage both of these events for a variety of reasons, and I don’t think that’s fair. You can reap great benefits from either event both professionally and personally. I know I have. I also know that based on monetary constraints, most voice talents can only choose one per year. I can’t and won’t tell you which one is best for you. I think it depends on your focus. Like I’ve said over and over again, to be a successful voiceover artist is to be a successful voiceover business and many facets need development. Choose what’s best for you!
