Voiceovers and Vanity – The GKN Weekly Update 8/11/15

Voice talents are a vainglorious lot.

Or are they?

Today, (or tomorrow, or yesterday depending on when you read this) I’m heading to New York City to tape an episode of “Movie Talk Show” hosted by Carrie & Lesley. I think it will air this Friday on local able access TV but I’ll let you know. You can learn more about the show here.

This will be the fourth time I’ve been interviewed: two on-camera, one radio show, and one podcast. It’s fun and nerve-wracking and ego-bloating, all at the same time. Obviously, I want to do a good job. I want to look good, comport myself well, and make the interview as fun and informative as possible.

Does that make me vain?

As long as I’m not preening and making the interview totally self-serving, no. But feel free to keep me in check.

Does wanting to hear the sound of your own voice for money make you vain? Yeah, you, the one looking in the mirror cradling your mic…

TIP OF THE WEEK

Yes and no.

The great sage and British voice talent Phillip Banks once said, “A struggling Voice Over has a massive ego completely out of control. A successful Voice Over has a massive ego, for the most part, under control.”

Do you need an ego to be a successful voice talent? Yes, but it must be effectively managed. Don’t let your ego make your business decisions for you.

Do you need to be vain to be a successful voice talent?

“Vain”: having or showing an excessively high opinion of one’s appearance, abilities, or worth.

Based on that definition, I’d say no. However, you need to be confident in your abilities. And how do you do that? Solid training & coaching, consistent practice, development of business acumen, and healthy Systems of Thought & Systems of Execution. Oh, and a massive ego, for the most part, under control.
