Voiceovers And Surrounding Yourself With The Right People – The GKN Weekly Update 4/21/15
Hello and Happy Talk Like Shakepeare Day! In honor of this holiday, below is my favorite sonnet. And NO, I don’t have anyone in particular in mind. Enjoy!
My mistress’ eyes are nothing like the sun; Coral is far more red than her lips’ red; If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun; If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head. I have seen roses damask’d, red and white, But no such roses see I in her cheeks; And in some perfumes is there more delight Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks. I love to hear her speak, yet well I know That music hath a far more pleasing sound; I grant I never saw a goddess go; My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground: And yet, by heaven, I think my love as rare As any she belied with false compare.
NEWS AND NOTES!
I want to send out a big honkin’ THANK YOU to the wonderful voice talents who attended the Tennessee Voice Over Exchange and Top Shelf Studios seminars this past week. They made feel welcome and it was truly a pleasure to speak before them. A special thanks to Christi Bowen and Tom Filogomo for putting the events together.
Man, those were fun seminars! I really did have a good time. Not just because I got to meet some great people, but because I love giving back to a voiceover community that has been so good to me over the years.
In both seminars, I talked about ways to set yourself up for success as a voiceover business. In my opinion, one of the most important things you need to do is to surround yourself with the right people.
Easier said than done, but I think it’s critical.
For more years than I care to admit, I surrounded myself with the wrong people. Way wrong. I worked in food service and many of the managers & employees just straight up didn’t like me. Some of that was self-inflicted, I admit, but many of them didn’t give me a chance because I was always trying to move forward with my voiceover career and who the hell do I think I am, right? Where do I get off trying to be better than them?
I remember one night I was running the host stand and one of the bigger haters grabbed the mic and said, “Tom, your mom is on Line One and your agent is on Line Two.” A real sweetheart, huh?
Unfortunately, I was too insecure & scared to leave that environment for a long time and as a result, it took much longer than necessary to advance my voiceover career. Never again, I say!
TIP OF THE WEEK: Seek out people to help you be the best version of yourself. People who can help you make the person you are match up with the vision of who you want to become.
There may be people in your life who do not want you to be a success. Sometimes it’s friends or family. This requires tough love and even tougher choices. This often involves difficult conversations with important people in your life. Sometimes you have to break ties with those who are dragging you down.
Remember; you are the only person responsible for your success. If you are going to fail, fail with no excuses!
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
(I heard this exchange while I was waiting to get on the bus at Port Authority in NYC)
Girl handing out pamphlets: Jesus loves you! Old Lady: No he doesn’t! Stop saying that!
STUFF!: there were a crazy amount of awesome movie trailers that released last week so I thought I’d share some of them with you. Dig it, yo!
