Are You a Loving Voice Talent? – The GKN Weekly Update 2/24/15

Hello and Happy Inconvenience Yourself Day and Post-Oscar Day! Did you stay up way too late on a Sunday night to watch yet another bloated glitter-fest? Yeah, me too.

BTW I got 13 out of 24 right. Not too bad. The night before I got 9 out of 14 right at the Independent Spirit Awards. How did you do?

Last week I was talking to an old friend about relationships and how people communicate. He told me about a book called The 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman. The book claims that there are five ways in which we can communicate how we care about someone. They are:

Often, the problem is that the way one person gives their love doesn’t match up with how the other person wants to receive it.

I buy you all these gifts!

But you never tell me you love me!

See what I mean?

TIP OF THE WEEK: How does this relate to being a “loving” voiceover talent?

All relationships are based on communication and trust. If you can’t effectively communicate to your spouse, sibling, client, or friend, they won’t know what you’re thinking or feeling. It’s mighty hard to build trust that way.

The best way to develop strong lines of communication is to listen. Figure out what they want & need and give it to them, even if it isn’t your preferred method. For example, just because you need Words of Affirmation or like Receiving Gifts doesn’t necessarily mean your client does. They may think you’re kissing up to them.

Once you learn to speak their language, they’ll “love” you for it!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

Jeffrey Eisenberg 01

Success is the measure of how many little things you do right. Jeffrey Eisenberg

STUFF!: I saw two diametrically opposed movies last week: Chef and Jupiter Ascending. Chef, written & directed by Jon Favreau (who also did Swingers, Made, and Iron Man) was a ton of fun! Jupiter Ascending is a Wachsowski film and, I know this will sound strange, but I liked everything about the movie except the movie.
